Ford has revealed a fully electric Mustang Mach-E NASCAR prototype

Three electric motors, one phat battery, a lot of… tyre squeal?

Published: 31 Jan 2025

Here we go then, Ford’s very first fully electric NASCAR prototype. It’s a Mustang Mach-E that looks like a good bit of fun.

Ford hasn’t provided much garnish to go with the meat of these pics, only telling us this Mach-E is a demonstrator with a 78kWh battery and three electric motors housed inside a full carbon fibre tub, all packaged up into the body of a family crossover. If the family crossover suddenly started hitting the gym really, really hard.

It also gets the current NASCAR Cup Series car’s suspension, brakes and steering setup, along with its wheels. And that’s… about it.

Last year, of course, NASCAR itself revealed an electric prototype developed in collaboration with Ford, Toyota and Chevy, packing a whopping [cue Doc Brown voice] 1,000kW. That’s the equivalent of 1,341bhp. Which feels like enough.

Can’t wait to see these pumped up, electrified jackhammers tearing strips out of each other on a series of banked ovals? Don’t hold your breath. At that prototype’s unveil last year, NASCAR admitted it was “committed to the historic role of the combustion engine in racing”, but that it was also committed to “decarbonising its own carbon footprint” by 2035.

So yes, thundering V8s ramming each other off the road at 200mph for hours on end is still on the menu for a while, but this… could be a good bit of fun, maybe as a support series. More as we get it.
