BMW 1 Series (112,312)
Even though the BMW 1 Series is now front-engined - or AWD, for those inclined - it's still a great choice. Good to drive (the earlier RWD models are of course better), good infotainment and good interior build quality, though bear in mind the more expensive servicing and consumables.

The Audi A3 is popular hatchback for good reason. Decent dynamics - if not class best - coupled with a plush interior that comes with a reasonable amount of premium tech. New or secondhand, it's pricey... and servicing costs won't be cheap either.
VW Polo (137,517)
With a sophisticated, well-mannered drive, the Volkswagen Polo is a great little car. Nippy in towns and cities, comfortable enough on longer journeys, the 1.0-litre engine delivers the holy trinity of small family car appeal; performance, flexibility and economy.

The BMW 3 Series means business, with a capital 'B'. The benchmark executive saloon for donkeys' years now, it combines style with refined performance that is anything but suited, booted, briefcase-carrying and stuffy. While compact, the 3 Series can morph unflinchingly into the family wagon you've always wanted, too.
BMW Mini (158,710)
Clearly you've taken our used Mini buying guide to heart to put the Mini in the top five used best-sellers list for 2022. And why not? It's a hoot to drive, easy to park and doesn't cost a tonne to run. The Mini's track record for reliability, economy and handling make it a great city pick.
Vauxhall Astra (165,011)
While the Vauxhall Astra is not as good-looking as the Golf and not quite as well-packaged as the Focus, it does deliver where it matters; comfort, fuel economy and practicality. What's more, the Astra is more affordable without a huge amount of compromise. And that's the reason it's proven such a popular choice for drivers.
Ford Focus (213,821)
The Ford Focus is a brilliant family wagon - the benchmark hatch for dynamics, it's also reliable, practical and, depending on the model of course, not too financially crippling. Invest in one that's ULEZ compliant if you hit urban zones frequently and check out our guide to buying a used Ford Focus.

The industry benchmark that the VW Golf has set for family hatchbacks can't be ignored. It's stylish, perfectly proportioned and offers decent fuel economy in a vast range of engines. We've handily curated this buying guide to point out any pitfalls in securing a used one. You're welcome.
Vauxhall Corsa (229,454)
A popular first car, the Vauxhall Corsa takes the second spot for the UK's top-selling used cars for 2022. A great little car at an affordable little price.

Cheap to run and brilliant to drive, it's little wonder the Ford Fiesta is the bestselling used car in the UK. Get a pristine example with few miles on the clock and with enough room to store it for a few decades, it'll make you a small fortune in years to come. Probably.
