The great Sir Michael Gambon has passed away

Legendary actor, whose name will be forever attached to the TG test track, has died at the age of 82

Published: 28 Sep 2023

Sir Michael Gambon - the legendary British actor whose name was given to the final corner of the Top Gear test track - has sadly passed away after contracting pneumonia. He was 82.

Gambon is best known for his role as Albus Dumbledore in half a dozen of the Harry Potter films and for an acclaimed stage career that brought him three Olivier Awards. But he also holds legendary status among TGTV viewers for his exuberant driving in the revamped version of the show in 2002.

As the eighth Star in a Reasonably Priced Car in Series 1, Gambon briefly became airborne and very nearly rolled the Suzuki Liana in the final corner, after which it was forever known simply as ‘Gambon’ in tribute.

Gambon returned to the show a few years later, saying of his first appearance: “Well, I was a huge success. I’m a household name now because of that corner, Gambon corner. Everyone knows me.”

His lap time in the Chevrolet Lacetti was nearly five seconds quicker than the original wet lap he’d clocked in the Liana, but naturally he nearly spun again in his own corner. “What is it with that corner?” asked Jeremy Clarkson afterwards. “I don’t know,” he replied. “I just don’t like it!”

Rest in peace, Sir Michael. You can watch his Series 1 interview here and his Series 8 appearance here.
