New year, new mag: TG’s exclusive McLaren Speedtail review

Plus: a whopping TGTV preview, Baja Boot off-roading and triple tests galore...

Published: 06 Jan 2020

What’s the best way to begin a new decade? A fresh gym membership? Dry January? Pah, what you really want is the best spot on the sofa and a copy of the brand spanking new January edition of Top Gear Magazine.

And what a treat we have for you. Because this month we’ve got Chris Harris’s world exclusive drive of the bonkers 250mph McLaren Speedtail. Yep, Harris is the first person outside of McLaren to have a go in the £1.75m, three-up supercar. Not a bad start to the year.

We’ve also got a full preview of Series 28 of TopGear TV, and we’ve been looking ahead at the 20 cars we’re most looking forward to driving in 2020. Spoiler alert – the performance car isn’t dead yet.

Elsewhere, we head to Tokyo to meet the fabled creator of the Gran Turismo series Kazunori Yamauchi, and there’s the small matter of driving from Los Angeles down to Mexico in Jim Glickenhaus’ modern incarnation of Steve McQueen’s 1967 Baja Boot. If you aren’t aware, it’s essentially a Tonka-toy-sized off-roader that wears a supercharged V8 engine like a teenager’s rucksack.

And that’s not all. This month there’s drives of the all-new Volkswagen Golf, the Polestar 2, the Vauxhall Corsa and a prototype version of the Toyota Yaris GR-4 homologation special. Plus, we’ve got two triple tests – one between the BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe, Audi S7 Sportback and Porsche Panamera 4 e-Hybrid Sport Turismo, and the other between the Polestar 1, the Bentley Continental GT and the McLaren GT. Grab your copy now to find out the winners.

There’s also updates on our long-term Ford Focus ST, Mercedes-AMG GT63 4dr and Mazda 3, as well as some lovely retro-ness in the form of the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato – one half of Aston’s £6m twin-Zagato package.
