Icons reinvented: brand-new issue of Top Gear mag out now

Including the Porsche 935, the all-new Corvette C8 and the Harley-Davidson Livewire

Published: 14 Aug 2019

It takes a brave manufacturer to bring back an icon. Y’know, those cars that will live long in the memory thanks to their loveable characters, motorsport successes or general good-looks.

We’re glad that some give it a go from time-to-time though, except in the case of the new Ford Puma of course – that should have stayed dead.

Still, this month we wanted to celebrate those who have got it right. So, there’s the full update on the mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette C8, our first drive/ride of the all-electric Harley-Davidson Livewire and a trip to Italy to find out whether Danny Bahar’s Ares Panther ProgettoUno captures the spirit of the original DeTomaso Pantera.

Our man Tom Ford also manages to secure some time in the bonkers new Porsche 935 – a track toy that pays homage to the legendary ‘Moby Dick’ racer of 1978. Believe us, it’s not one to be missed.

Elsewhere, we take Polestar’s hybrid uber-coupe, the 1, to the Lofoten Islands in Norway and pit the new Porsche Cayman GT4 against its father.

In our dedicated drives section we’ve got a triple test of the Dacia Sandero, the Toyota Aygo and the Suzuki Ignis – all of which can be had for under £100 per month on PCP deals if you exercise caution with the options lists. And then it’s back to business as usual when we get behind the wheels of Merc’s AMG A45 S mega-hatch and Renault’s track-focused Megane RS Trophy R.

As usual, there’s also everything you need to know from the world of cars right now – including an interview with Aston Martin’s ‘High Performance Test Driver’ Chris Goodwin, straight after he’d completed a hot lap of Silverstone in the 1,160bhp Valkyrie. Crikey.

And don’t forget about our long-term test garage, where this month we welcome an extremely yellow Renault Megane RS Trophy and say goodbye to our much-loved Mercedes-AMG G63.
