Ferrari, the future: the latest issue of Top Gear mag is here

Ferrari's hybrid and SUV future explored, massive TGTV preview, Danny Ric in a Clio V6

Published: 19 Jun 2019

Ferrari. There are few – if many – more evocative names in the world of cars. Its past we know well: screaming V8 supercars, stupendous V12 GTs and some significant motorsport dominance with the help of a man called Michael.

But what about Ferrari’s future? That’s what the latest issue of Top Gear magazine delves into, with a look at the company’s wild new hybrid supercar: the 1,000bhp SF90 that’s basically a half-price LaFerrari. Then there’s the inevitable SUV and its lucrative line of one-off specials, one of which they’ve let us loose in. Eek.

Don’t want your off-road Italian supercar to have any semblance of practicality? Then meet the Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato. If you’re wondering, ‘Sterrato’ means dirt, and thus we basically have a Lambo rally car, a skunkworks special we’ve driven and now badly want to be able to buy, too.

Away from the world of exotica, we hitch a ride in a Renault Clio with Daniel Ricciardo as our driver. Not any old Clio, of course, but a bright yellow Clio V6, known for its, um, involving handling characteristics. Is Danny Ric still smiling after a stint behind the wheel?

We’ve also got a huge guide to the new series of Top Gear TV, with a behind the scenes look at all of the big films as well as a big interview with your new telly presenting team.

Then there’s the one you’ve been waiting for: Toyota Supra versus all of its key rivals, including the BMW M2, Alpine A110 and Porsche 718 Cayman. Is the most-hyped car of the year a worthy sports car contender? We’ve also taken a trek along Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh trail in a rather special Peugeot.

We’ve our usual wealth of drives, too, with multitudinous performance SUVs – from new BMW X3 M to Bentley Bentayga Speed – as well as an actual camper van and a battle between the Tesla Model 3 and two of its more obtuse rivals. There's even a sneaky go in the brand spanking new Vauxhall Corsa.

Over in the Top Gear Garage, we welcome a new Dacia Duster and BMW Z4, as well as – naturally – a 1990s Mercedes S-Class that sounds like an F1 car. Confused? All is revealed in our dedicated Retro section. Because even as we glimpse into the future of one of our favourite carmakers, it’s worth remembering not everyone makes ‘em like they used to.
