Defender on the Moon: new issue of TG mag out now!

The new Defender has been tested to extremes by Land Rover, but we took it further

Published: 11 Sep 2019

It’s a busy old time in the world of cars. Perhaps the biggest recent news, of course, surrounds the unveiling of the all-new Land Rover Defender. It’s a big one for JLR this, and we know they’ve tested it in some pretty extreme locations to make sure it’s right.

We can bet they didn’t take it as far as we did though. Yep, TG has put the new Defender on the Moon. Want the full story? You’ll have to pick up the latest issue of Top Gear magazine, which conveniently is out now.

In this month’s issue, we’ve also got the full story on the limited edition, hybrid-powered Lamborghini Siån, the wideboy Audi RS6 Avant and the all-electric Porsche Taycan.

Oh, and there’s the small matter of that time we maxed-out a Bugatti Chiron and then watched on trackside as test driver Andy Wallace took the bonkers new Chiron Super Sport 300+ Prototype beyond the 300mph mark. What a time to be alive. This is not one to be missed.

Elsewhere, we’ve got a full suite of first drives. There’s the Top Gear take on the new Ferrari F8 Tributo, the Audi S4 Avant, the Morgan Plus Six and the Vauxhall Astra. Plus, we pit the old guard’s new EVs against each other. Yep, it’s the Jaguar I-Pace vs the Audi e-tron vs the Mercedes EQC.

That’s not it for electric power either, because EV-loving China has a new solution to range anxiety. We made the trip to test out Nio’s ES6 SUV, but also to see whether battery-swapping stations are the future.

If they aren’t, then maybe Volkswagen’s ID.3 will be. VW is pitching it as the affordable EV for the masses. We’ve got the full story so you can make up your own mind.

As usual, there’s also a whole array of lovely-looking retro content. This month, we’ve been driving the 350bhp Renault 5 Maxi Turbo.

We also welcome a Jaguar I-Pace to our long-term test fleet, and there are updates on our Renault Megane RS Trophy, Range Rover Velar, Alfa Romeo Giulia and BMW Z4.

Told you it’s been busy.
