#TopGearChallengeOne: Engineering

Your task is to make a car from bits and pieces you find around the house – the more creative the better. Your car can be the size of your sofa or as small as your hand, but MUST only be constructed using things you’ve found in your house: a yoghurt-pot monocoque, camembert gearbox and pipe-cleaner suspension, that kind of thing. If you happen to have a V8 in your living room, all the better. Marks will be awarded for the most creative use of recycled materials and deducted for anything showing signs of stockpiling muppetry.

Once you’re done, send us your masterpiece before midnight on Monday 13 April and we’ll put it in front of our panel of experts for evaluation. Joining the Top Gear team to review the submissions for #TopGearChallengeOne is Andy Palmer, Vehicle Line Director of McLaren, the man responsible for bringing the Speedtail to life.

The best submissions will then be showcased across Top Gear’s platforms while the engineers behind them – that’s you – will receive a special Top Gear Department of Education Certificate.

Important Note: all Top Gear Challenges are designed to be completed from inside the safety of your own home so please stay indoors, have some fun and showcase your creativity.

How to send us your stuff. Read this bit, it’s really important…

Via Instagram: Post your creation on Instagram and make sure you include the hashtag #TopGearChallengeThree - that’s how we can see it. Note we can only see submissions from ‘public’ profiles, so if you’d rather remain a private Instagram user you’ll need to email us your submission instead. And make sure you follow @topgear on Instagram, otherwise we can’t get back to you!

Via email: If you don’t have Instagram or want to keep your submission out of the public eye until you inevitably win because it’s just so good, then send your picture to: editor@bbctopgearmagazine.com and make sure you title it #TopGearChallengeThree. Please note all entries must be under 15mb file size. Anything over this makes our inbox explode. No, really. And don’t forget to sign up to Top Gear’s regular newsletter, too.

If you’re under 16 then your parent or guardian must submit your content for you.

The Top Gear Department of Education isn’t an official qualification so don’t try and use it to get into university or get a job. The Top Gear Challenges are designed to let you showcase your talent and by playing along you agree that any content you send us may be published and may be edited.

Submissions we publish will be selected by members of the Top Gear editorial team and some of the most notable people in the automotive industry. They will be selected on their levels of ingenuity, creativity and how well they answer the brief.

By playing along with the challenge you agree that the content is yours and you didn’t copy it off the internet and present it as your homework. TG accepts no responsibility for any copyright infringement of items published in good faith as the original work of those submitting it.
