Mercedes-AMG One: 13 big numbers on the £2.3m F1 car for the road

Not a headline amount, considering the Ford GT’s V6 had 650bhp, yet this humble 1.6 – derived from Lewis Hamilton’s title-winning F1 car – makes 359bhp per litre.

Stratospheric, sure, but not the highest revving combustion engine ever built. However, transplanting an engine that normally idles at around 5,000rpm (Hamilton’s F1 car) to settle at 1,200rpm (the One) was one of the hardest parts of the whole project.

Short for ‘motor generator unit kinetic’ – an e-motor that sits on the crank to boost the engine.

The turbocharger’s companion is there to give it an instant boost, spooling it up quickly and erasing lag. Will also offer a kind word and be a shoulder to lean on during rough times.

That’s Volkswagen Golf R power, per wheel. There’s all manner of wizardry learned from the SLS Electric Drive to help the One scythe through corners better.

Despite its USP being an F1 car for the road, the One’s electric motors do most of the heavy lifting, at least off the line, so is it more of an EV than an ICE car?

But no VTEC, yo.

There is enough room for a set of earplugs, mind.

The backrests can also be adjusted to either 25 or 30 degrees, and the steering wheel can be moved electrically.

There’s a lot of the Mercedes-AMG One occurring.

Should be enough to get to the supermarket for some milk… or set a blistering time around the Nürburgring.

Figures that you’d deem ‘sufficient’, or ‘x&*%ing fast’.

Um, yeah.

Apparently it’s impossible to calculate because of the AMG One’s savage complexity. But what is life without a little mystery?
