Suzuki Splash news - Predictable headlines Vol II: Making a Splash - 2008

Published: 05 Jul 2007

The Suzuki Splash first reared its stubby little head back in May, but now the Japanese manufacturer has released some concrete details about its mini-MPV.

That's mini-MPV with the emphasis firmly on 'mini'. The Splash measures just 372cm from bumper to bumper, meaning it's 10cm shorter than the Honda Jazz. Which isn't the biggest.

Nonetheless, Suzuki reckons there's room inside for five, a claim we'll soon be testing with the tallest members of the TG office. Breathe in, lads.

The Splash gets the choice of two petrol and one diesel engine: the oil-burner is a 1.3-litre effort which puts out 74bhp, while there's a 1.0-litre entry-level petrol engine or a more powerful 1.2-litre four-cylinder motor developing 85bhp.No such variety in the gearbox department, though - you'll get a five-speed manual and no arguing.

There's no word on a hot version yet, but we're hoping for a bodykitted effort with a buzzy little turbo engine which'll take the fight to the Panda 100HP.

But no matter what we think: Suzuki reckons the Splash will shift 60,000 units in Europe in its first year. Better get used to seeing them around, then.
