SsangYong claims its new Torres SUV is not named after the ex-Liverpool and Chelsea striker

Apparently it’s something to do with a National Park in Patagonia, not the former professional footballer

Published: 20 May 2022

Remember SsangYong? Well, it’s still a thing, and it’s about to launch its fifth car in the UK (if you include the Musso pickup, that is).

All we have are these sketches so far, but SsangYong claims that it’ll be a medium-sized SUV that plugs a gap between the smaller Korando and the larger seven-seat Rexton. We’re told that order books will open this summer, and interestingly a full EV version will also be available in Europe, although that won’t arrive until the end of 2023.

Looks like it’ll be pretty rugged, doesn’t it? SsangYong talks about its new ‘Powered by Toughness’ design philosophy and ‘a sense of adventure, challenge, and escapism’. We'll be the judge of that when we get to drive the thing.

The best bit though? It’ll be called the SsangYong Torres, which might make quite a few football fans out there very happy indeed. Maybe SsangYong is aiming to sell a boatload in Liverpool? Rumour has it it’s not named after the Spanish international striker though (boo), and instead takes inspiration from the Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia. Shame.
