New Porsche Cayenne Coupe vs used Mercedes-AMG G63
Both SUVs, both German...but totally and completely different. Which would you pick?
Welcome back to perhaps the most successful coupe/SUV-thing yet - at least in terms of looks, don’t you think? It’s the Porsche Cayenne Coupe - a rival to the likes of the Audi Q8, BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE Coupe - and it’s arriving in the UK this month.
Prices start at £62,129 for the base Cayenne, and rise to £104,729 for the full-fat Turbo. If the former feels like too little Cayenne and the latter too much, Porsche has just announced the middling Cayenne S. It has a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 giving 434bhp and 406lb ft, for 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds (with one of the optional “ lightweight sports packages”) and a top speed of 163mph. The price is £73,658.
A quick trawl through the Internet reveals what else you could have for such a sum. If you want to keep it in the family, you could have a nearly-new Porsche Panamera. If you’re certifiably insane, you could have a Bentley Azure. Or you could have an SUV - one not at all like the Cayenne in any shape or form.
Yep, for £75,000 you could have an old Mercedes-AMG G63 - a vehicle conceived and designed in the Seventies, improved through the years and eventually supplemented with a whopping V8. These things are utterly terrifying but brilliantly charismatic, tremendously lovable and completely unstoppable. Objectively worse than the Cayenne in almost every way, but would you rather have one over Porsche’s latest big’un? An SUV as they are now, or as they used to be?
