Mercedes has facelifted the GLS, which means new AMG and Maybach versions too

Merc continues to refresh its range of SUVs, with the Maybach GLS now getting a 23-inch forged wheel option

Published: 04 Apr 2023

In the last couple of months, Mercedes has unveiled facelifted versions of the GLA, the GLB, the GLC and the GLE. Must have been a busy stint for the designers, but then again, that’ll teach them for penning so many SUVs.

Anyway, the final pieces of this particularly large puzzle have now fallen into place, because this is the updated GLS, which arrives alongside its monstrous AMG and Maybach siblings.

The changes are fairly limited, with the standard GLS getting a more prominent grille with extra air intakes and seriously chunky horizontal bars running across it. It also gets a new rear light signature, a new 20-inch wheel option and fresh leather colours inside – ‘Bahia brown’ sounds particularly pleasing.

It’s a seven-seater as standard, of course, and we’re told that the updated MBUX infotainment system comes with redesigned displays and three different ‘styles’ to choose from: classic, sporty or discreet.

There’s absolutely nothing discreet about the Maybach GLS, though. It gets new paint options, new stitching on the seats and a new forged 23-inch wheel as an option. Because lightweight wheels are all important on a car such as this…

The AMG GLS also comes with a forged wheel option, and its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is now fitted with a 48-volt mild hybrid system that acts as a starter motor and gives a 22bhp boost to the already ridiculous 604bhp engine.

Further updates to the AMG include another new LED rear light signature and two new paint colours, while the standard equipment list grows to include an electric panoramic sliding sunroof, heated and cooled front seats, an AMG sports exhaust system, a fancy Burmester sound system and Merc’s 360-degree Parking Pilot.

So there we have it folks, that’s all of Merc’s standard SUV range updated (not including the EVs or the G-Wagen). What do we think?
