Video: the McLaren 570S vs Porsche 911 Turbo vs Audi R8 V10
Can McLaren's 562bhp 'baby' beat the best Germany has to offer?
McLaren means business. Its range of carbon-structured, V8-powered supercars has now spread to almost accessible territory. Enter the 570S.
Okay, £143,000 is still an awful lot of money. But in supercar terms, it's the entry point: it's where you'll find borderline sensible stuff like a (very well-specced) Audi R8 and Porsche 911 Turbo. The McLaren, you'll be delighted to know, still has upward swinging doors and a very focused driving position.
What you surely want to know, though, is if the little Mac can compete with cars as established as the R8 and 911.
And we can tell you. We drove the Audi and Porsche all the way to Portugal to meet the new McLaren, and you can see how they all get on in the fine roads of Portugal's Serra da Estrela, courtesy of the video above.
There is also some quite nice noise...
The Audi, tested here in V10 Plus guise, is both the cheapest (£134,500), most powerful (602bhp) and fastest (205mph), though the 552bhp Porsche - the 911 in its topmost Turbo S spec - is comfortably the quickest accelerating, the only car to hit 60mph in less than three seconds.
The McLaren's trump card? At 1,409kg, it's 200 kilos lighter than the others and is the only one with rear-wheel drive, so it ought to be the wieldiest on such epically twisting roads.
Place your bets...
