Reckon the Carrera GT can go faster at the 'Ring with its fresh new tyres?
Porsche and Michelin combine to create a new tyre for the 21-year-old supercar. Porsche claims “even faster lap times”
The Carrera GT might be over two decades old, but Porsche is still intent on improving it.
Together with Michelin, Porsche Classic and the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach have developed a whole new model-specific tyre for the glorious 5.7-litre V10-engined supercar, with Porsche claiming the goal was to “further improve the driving dynamics and safety of the super sports car on both wet and dry roads”.
Oh, and as a result of those things, Porsche also reckons the new Pilot Sport Cup 2s with N0 markings enable “even faster lap times on track”. Excellent news. Reckon Porsche should have a crack at bettering the Carrera GT’s old 7m 28s Nürburgring time? Apparently, development driver and professional hotshoe Jörg Bergmeister tested this new tyre at the ‘Ring, so surely it’s now time to break out the stopwatch? And yes, we would like to be there to witness it.
“The Carrera GT is an absolute dream car, so I’m delighted that these new tyres have taken the performance of this legend to a whole new level,” said Jörg. “I’m impressed by how the engineers improved the feedback at the upper limits. You feel much more distinctly the point at which the tyre starts to lose its grip.”
Yeah, probably helpful when you’ve got 604bhp being sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox and only 1,380kg to slow you down. Oh, and in terms of safety, we’re told the new tyres knock 2.5 metres off the Carrera GT’s stopping distance from 62mph and a whole 12 metres off from 124mph.
“The new tyres not only make the Carrera GT faster, they make it easier for the car to be driven at speed,” says Bergmeister. Driven at speed... at the 'Ring?
