Rare Porsche 918 Spyder up for auction... got £2m spare?
One (presumably) careful owner, 500 miles on the clock and a funky paint job... time for a whip-round?
Sotheby’s is auctioning off a Porsche 918 Spyder. But of course, it’s not just any old 918 Spyder. It’s totally unique and the auction house is expecting it to fetch almost £2 million smackeroonies.
This very special 918 Spyder has Porsche’s Weissach package. Remember that? Quick recap: it reduces this hypercar's weight by over 45kg by switching out the front lid, roof, wing mirrors and rear spoiler for carbon-fibre.
It also adds forged magnesium wheels (one-and-a-half times lighter than aluminium), ceramic wheel bearings and lighter brakes, and assembles the lot with titanium bolts.
Weissach spec even goes as far to use a thin film coating instead of the usual body paint. So one of the many unusual features of this whip includes the classic Martini Racing-inspired ‘Psychedelic Design’ red and white colour scheme. That’s complemented by white wheels and a red, cow-clad interior.
After all the lightweighting, the car covers 0-60mph in a blisteringly quick 2.5 seconds, matching the McLaren P1 no less. It has a top speed of 214mph.
Though there was a limited run of 918 of these particular Spyders, Sotheby’s reckons this could be ‘the finest and most lavishly specced 918 Spyder in existence’. Bold claim, but totally justified: its one previous owner has clocked less than 500 miles.
The hammer falls on 17 January 2024 at 5pm in one of Sotheby’s Sealed auctions in Switzerland. So the question now is, would you if you could?
