Be afraid: a ‘flagship’ Porsche 911 is on the horizon, and it might just be a GT2
Porsche wants to ‘raise the bar’ with the 992.2 and yep, this is getting scary
Porsche is getting ready to roll out a new range-topping version of its 911 and yes, you should be afraid. Considering the current range can leap tall buildings in a single bound, this new top-dollar special will be able to move mountains.
At least, that’s what we’re guessing. Porsche simply said: “the 911 family will also welcome an additional flagship model, which will raise the bar even further in the sports car segment”.
Your first thought might be ‘911 Turbo’, right? You’d be correct, only a Porsche 911 Turbo is now routine. Doesn’t need a special announcement, we’d proffer, as it’s now so ingrained within the family, it’s a box to tick. Expect it along very soon.
Oh, it’ll be some box. The current 911 GTS deploys what Porsche calls a ‘T-hybrid’ system, which marries a newly developed 3.6-litre turbocharged flat-six with a pair of electric motors – one in the eight-speed PDK gearbox, one to spool up the turbo – for a 534bhp total.
The GTS is a single turbo car. So we’re guessing Porsche will add another turbo to the Properly Turbo 911 Turbo to make… well, considerably more than the GTS’s 534bhp. And with 4WD, it’ll power ahead considerably faster than the GTS’s sub-three-second 0-62mph time.
It’s likely this hybridised Turbo base Porsche will use if a GT2 RS is indeed the special new "flagship" that’ll "raise the bar even further". Because that’s what the last one – back in 2017 – did. Take the Turbo base, dial everything right up to 11. Slap a GT2 RS badge on the back and wait for the screaming. It posted a stonking ‘Ring lap time, developed just under 700bhp, and was crazy enough to elicit great sweaty reams of invective not fit for publication from its driver.
So if the naturally aspirated 992.2 GT3 is already such a loon – heck, any 992.2-gen 911 is crazy quick – imagine what that-plus-turbo in a new-era-hybrid GT2 would equal. Yeesh.
Back in the normal orbit of these things, Porsche has confirmed another ‘Heritage Design Strategy’ version of the 911, too, which will be the third of four special editions planned. More as we have it…
