Man 3D prints Aston Martin

Published: 01 Aug 2013

Decent Aston Martin DB4s usually cost £350,000. But a New Zealander called Ivan has come up with a cheaper way to get his hands on one. It involves a 247bhp Nissan Skyline GTS-25T, a£330 3D printer, and many, many hours...

After computer programmer Ivan Sentch picked up a Solidoodle 3D printer in December 2012 he created a render of a 1961 series II DB4 using design software. Then, after separating the drawing into around 2500 small pieces, began printing it out.

Once the pieces were printed, he stuck them together around a wooden buck then sanded it back to form the larger panels you can see in the pics. He'll be using them as plugs for a fibreglass mould that'll sit on top the 247bhp Skyline's chassis.

Sentch told Solidoodle: "I'm an absolute noob, but I learn quickly. I'm a programmer but I've been exposed to CAD since school age and I've been using it at a hobby level for the last 15 years. But rarely 3D models and never at this level of complexity...

"This is just the printing, there will be endless months of work once it's all assembled before I can take a mould. I've only [got] 28 per cent of the body left to print, and the dash. I've printed 13.42 m² so far..."

Would you drive Sentch's print out?
