“I’ve built some pretty crazy things. I call myself an automotive artist: I’m into styling and function.” Randy Grubb
With the three-wheeled Polaris Slingshot halfway through its one-off Run The Coast road trip, time to head into the tree-lined highways of Oregon. And after the glamour of the Californian Pacific roads, and the awesome redwood-lined Avenue of the Giants, comes a more unexpected destination: the sleepy town of Grant’s Pass.

Grant’s Pass is just a short hop from Oregon state capital Portland, which delights in its unofficial motto: “the home of the weird”. So perhaps it’s no surprise that Randy Grubb chose to base his world-famous workshop here.
Randy is the
automotive artist and engineer responsible for some of the most out-there vehicles of recent times. Following a successful career in high-end glass-blowing, making luxury French-style paperweights for a discerning crowd, in 2001 he turned his skills to a new hobby: designing and building one-off pieces of vehicular art. No computers or CAD, just tools, pen and paper.

Like the Tank Car: a 6.4-meter, 4,500kg hot-rod, powered by a 29.5-liter engine from an M47 Patton Tank. Jay Leno liked it so much he bought it on the spot.
Or the Decoliner, the RV Flash Gordon would have holidayed inside, based on a 1973 GMC motorhome and fully steerable from a bridge on the roof.
Or the Decopod: a three-wheeled scooter complete with swooping, futuristic bodyshell and doors, winner of first place at the Quail Motorcycle Gathering.
So who better to test-ride the Polaris Slingshot, another three-wheeled vehicle like no other? Click the video above to see what happened when Run The Coast reached Grant’s Pass, Oregon, and see you next time as the Slingshot heads to Portland and a very special race...
