Wow, Bertone will make this stunning new Runabout with over 500bhp
New-age Bertone launches a Classic range with a remake of the Autobianchi A112 Runabout
Earlier this year, the Bertone brand was relaunched and its name was plastered onto a 1,109bhp twin-turbo Lamborghini Huracán with a rather lovely new all-carbon body stuck on top. Clearly, that was just the start.
The wonderful wedge you see here is a complete reimagining of the Autobianchi A112 Runabout concept designed for Bertone by the great Marcello Gandini, first shown at the Turin motor show in October 1969.
This new iteration – which looks utterly fantastic in these renders – will be known as the Bertone Runabout after brothers Jean-Franck and Mauro Ricci bought the rights to the Bertone brand back in 2022, and it signifies the launch of a new ‘Bertone Classic’ range that’ll continue to bring back some of Bertone’s greatest designs.
Where the original A112 Runabout (which was the inspiration for the production Fiat X1/9) used a shorter Fiat 128 platform and a 1.1-litre, rear-mounted four-cylinder engine that made around 50bhp, this new car will be powered by a 500bhp+ V6. It’ll be produced in limited numbers and will apparently “preserve the character of a nimble, light-footed driving machine”.
Unlike the original Gandini concept there will actually be side access doors, and as you can see from the images there’ll be two configurations; a properly roofless barchetta or a targa with removable panels up top. UK buyers will probably want to spec the latter.
“The new Bertone Runabout is not just a design object but a celebration of Italy’s tradition of spectacular sports cars - crafted for driving pleasure and the joy of life,” said current Bertone design boss Andrea Mocellin. “It captures the essence of pure design with only two defining lines.”
We’re told that production is set to start in mid-2026, with prices kicking off at €350,000 before tax.
