The Totem GTAmodificata is a million-pound racer which gets to 60 in just 2.6s

Totem Automobili - a restorer of classic Alfa Romeos - will finish its GT series production run with a swansong ‘GTAmodificata’ model, which boasts a substantial power and bodywork revision over its GTSuper version.

Just five will be built and priced at close to a million pounds each, and while that may sound ludicrous on first impressions, just wait until you hear what this modern interpretation of Alfa’s vintage racer can do. It’s… ludicrous.

The GTAmodificata retains the same V6 found in the GTSuper, but it's embiggened to 3.2 litres (from 2.6) and the six-speed manual has been swapped for a sequential. The result? 810bhp and 538lb ft of torque sent to the rear wheels in a car which weighs, as near as makes no difference, one tonne. That’s quite a result.

Power isn’t the only difference over the GTSuper, with new Bilstein suspension and dampers - designed specifically for this car - working in unison with Pirelli Trofeo R tyres to presumably make it not at all exciting and not at all fast around the twisty bits. 

It also looks pretty angry, what with the larger-than-the-Colosseum arches, additional spotlights and rivets along the car’s panels, the latter being a direct reference to the original.  

The car’s shell is also made entirely of something called 'carbon fibre' because it supposedly reduces weight and strengthens the frame, and because it looks cool. In fact, the exposed carbon also dominates the cabin, as does Alcantara.

We caught up with Riccardo Quaggio (CEO of Totem Automobili) at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show, and here’s what he had to say: “We wanted to build a proper racing car to end this family of cars with, so working alongside another big Italian brand, Italtecnica, a modern version of the Giulia GT racing car which did so well in the ‘60s and ‘70s felt like a good place to start.

“To do this we focused on one number: 200. We gave the standard GTSuper another 200 horsepower, reduced the weight by 200 kilograms, and then focused on finer details like bigger air vents and new exhausts. Of course, the carbon fibre monocoque is mostly the same, just exposed now, but we’ve given the GTAmodificata an all-new chassis and suspension setup to make it an actual daily-use car. Well, what I at least believe can be used in that way.”

Would be ludicrous not to use this one-tonne, 810bhp GTAmodificata every day, surely...
