Today's lovely continuation special is an Alvis Graber Super Coupe

Whether you've heard of Alvis or not, this updated Sixties grand tourer looks a spiffing way to travel

Published: 27 Sep 2021

The glorious car sitting before you is the Alvis Graber Super Coupe. It’s a continuation special from Alvis (who you can gen up on here). They’ve already produced a bunch of pre-war continuations, and this is their first post-war effort.

It’s one of six models that’ll be offered in Alvis’s Continuation Series, and each commission is – naturally – bespoke to its buyer. This one has been two years in the making (with a few delays – no prizes for guessing what’s caused them) and will be sold in Japan.

At its heart is a 3.0-litre engine, though modern processes have seen Alvis squeeze way more power out of it than originally – a 172bhp peak looks tame now, but is 42bhp up on the Sixties original and twinned with a punchy 209lb ft torque figure. Hot hatch-esque power, and hot hatch-esque performance results, with 0-60mph completed in a smidge under nine seconds.

Not that we suspect you’ll be doing that too often – this is very clearly a car designed for a subtler, more suave take on transportation than blatting everywhere close to the rev limit. Its all-aluminium bodywork is a sight to behold, not one to fire off into the distance.

“As a complete package, this Graber serves as a reminder that our manufacturing processes, which haven’t changed at Alvis since the early 20th century, still produce a product of the highest quality,” says Alvis MD, Alan Stote. “And unlike so many continuation cars, we have ensured this can be enjoyed on the road.”

It’s priced relatively sanely for its type, too. Alvis’s Continuation Series starts at £295,000, this Graber commanding £323,000. Like it?
