Singer beware? Meet the 406bhp air-cooled 911 by Theon Design
Six-speed manual box? Tick. Electronic dampers? Tick. Sub 1,200kg weight? TICK!
Another day, another restomod Porsche 911, though we aren’t complaining. The latest is a bespoke one-of-one 964 generation that’s been renovated by Oxfordshire-based Theon Designs. And no, it doesn’t have any association with that Greyjoy from Game of Thrones.
Currently stylised as ‘GBR002’, this 1992 Carrera 2 has been built from the ground up with the donor car being stripped back to its metal frame before being laminated with carbon fibre.
The body has then been finished in ‘Oak Green Metallic’ and coupled with dark ‘ghost’ stripes. Satin chrome brightwork and 18in Fuchs-style alloys complete the minimalist approach to exterior enhancements.
Retaining a purist mindset to speed through lightweight construction remains, with the car tipping the scales at just 1,169kg (200kg less than the original). It has been given an air-cooled, naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six, delivering 406bhp and 326lb ft of torque to the rear wheels via a six-speed walking stick.
The other significant changes include a new five-stage TracTive electronic damping system, which works in tandem with the limited-slip differential and full RS braking kit to bring together a package that will likely be quicker than that Greyjoy can jump overboard.
The attention to detail continues inside, as is the way with these blank cheque restorations. The original switchgear and touchpoints - such as the knobs and gauge rings - have been recraft in billet aluminium. Muslin leather and woven Alcantara can also be found in abundance around the cabin, while the green striped touring seats nod towards the exterior.
Co-founder of Theon Design, Adam Hawley, said: “From engineering and build to material selection and finishing, when we improve the car, we’re determined to preserve the 911’s essential essence. A Theon Design car still feels like a classic Porsche, just one that’s elevated to a new level of performance and usability. We strive to create the perfect blend of aesthetic, performance, and dynamic enhancements - creating something that’s thrillingly new, yet familiar in all the right ways.”
Though the exact price of this commission is unknown, Theon Design’s restomods tend to start at £380,000. That excludes the cost of the donor car but probably includes any plastic carrier bag charges for your documents. Customers also work closely with Theon Design to ensure the final product is entirely tailored to their needs over a process that can take as much as 18 months.
