Look at this amazing old Lamborghini Countach LP400 S from The Cannonball Run movie

Priceless hero car boasts extra lights, extra antennas and *many* extra exhausts

Published: 18 Jun 2024

The Lamborghini Countach has had a pretty respectable career on the big screen, with past works including Miami Vice and The Wolf of Wall Street. But aside from being ragged into multiple hedges and fountains by Leo DiCaprio, its finest moment arguably came in 1981’s The Cannonball Run, which saw a Nero Black LP400 S make many runs for many borders.

Some interesting modifications were made for the sake of oohing and aahing the audience too, including a two-beam headlight attachment to that long bonnet, an estimated 367 exhaust pipes out back and a triumvirate of *tiny* antennas.

The Senape-coloured cabin also had fake instrument clusters fitted along the passenger’s side of the dashboard, and forms part of a space which is in quite lovely condition. Not a bad place to sit and complete the 3,000-mile Cannonball Run from New York to Los Angeles, we think.

Mechanically, the Countach is expected to be bone stock. That means the 3.9-litre V12 should still produce 354bhp and send 210lb ft of torque to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. That’ll also mean a theoretical top speed of 186mph, though we doubt this car has seen more than 15mph in the real world of expensive hedges and fountains.

In the not-so-real-world, it was driven, with some haste, by Adrienne Barbeau and Tara Buckman (seen in the gallery above) to victory in the race, beating out the likes of Roger Moore, Burt Reynolds and Jackie Chan in the process.

What do we reckon, readers: where does it rank among yer favourite movie star cars?
