Inverted has electrified an old Toyota Land Cruiser
For the small sum of… £234k, you could own an old-new FJ40 with lots of electricity in it
Inverted, purveyor of that rather delightful electrified Range Rover Classic, has pointed its ray gun of e-power at the old Toyota Land Cruiser and given it the power of Grayskull. Well, not quite that much, but certainly enough to get out of its own way.
Welcome then, to the tuner’s new line of electrified FJs, taking in the FJ40 SWB, FJ43 ‘middle’ wheelbase and FJ45, er, LWB. Inverted strips each donor car right down to its undercrackers, and then goes about adding “fun and reliability” into the smokey old warhorse.
Principally via a 53kWh battery (in base spec) allied to a 215bhp electric motor with 250lb ft of torque. The motor’s housed inside the original transmission, and Inverted equips each FJ with switchable 4WD and 2WD modes and the option of an electronic locking diff.
All versions get CCS rapid charging up to 75kW, able to juice the old timer from 20-80 per cent in 25 minutes, with max range quoted at 150 miles. Naturally there’s better suspension, aptly sourced from ‘Old Man Emu’, the choice of either new Toyota or Wilwood brakes, a spruced up cabin with new leather and Apple CarPlay, plus air conditioning and a decent stereo. And a choice of bodystyles.
Prices start from £234,000 (including VAT), though of course each car will be fairly bespoke. Like, for example, if you want more power. Inverted can deploy a direct drive Tesla motor kicking out 320bhp and 310lb ft of torque, which’ll do plenty more than get out of its own way.
