Fancy buying Nigel Mansell’s weird three-wheeled iC Modulo M89?

Mansell was presented with this bonkers creation at the 1992 Italian Grand Prix and has kept it ever since

Published: 04 May 2022

Remember a few weeks back when we brought you the news that Nigel Mansell was selling his Ayrton Senna taxi from the 1991 British Grand Prix? Well, it turns out that our Nige is also shifting something else from his collection.

This one is slightly less well-known, though. It’s a particularly strange-looking iC Modulo M89 that was presented to Mansell by its creator Carlo Lamattina after the Williams driver qualified on pole at the 1992 Italian Grand Prix.

Lamattina must have been impressed with Mansell’s performance, because he gave away chassis number 001 of his three-wheeled creation. Nige must have liked it too, because he kept the thing for nearly 30 years.

The Modulo is equipped with a BMW K75S motorcycle engine making 74bhp. That’s connected to a BMW-sourced five-speed manual gearbox, and the powertrain only needs to shift 390kg thanks to the carbon fibre and Kevlar-reinforced polyester body. Rad fighter jet-style tandem seating arrangement too, isn’t it?

Fancy buying Mansell’s Modulo? It’s heading across the block at the RM Sotheby’s Monaco auction later this month with an estimate of between £4,250 and £21,500.
