Question of the Week

These are Hamilton’s greatest moments at Mercedes, as voted for by you

After 12 years and six titles, Lewis signs off from his Merc stint as an all-time great. But which has been *the* moment?

Published: 13 Dec 2024

So, Hamilton’s off to become the latest champion to try and land Ferrari a title for the first time since 2007. So we asked you lot what your favourite memory of him in a Silver Arrow is, and these are our favourite responses.

MishMish said: “2024 Abu Dhabi. The way he picked himself up and drove from P16 to P4 was so cool to watch. It was the drive of a champion, given that, at one stage, he had a 14-second gap to Russell. He drove like a madman to finish where he did, which was incredible.”

Running it way back, here’s Nik Sanderson’s answer: “His first qualifying pole at Silverstone. I was there with a mate and we saw it happen as the whole place erupted; a Spitfire swooped overhead immediately afterwards too. What an afternoon.”

David Lees is next up: “When he won his first race at Mercedes and then his first title, after all the negativity of people saying he made the wrong choice going there. He proved them all wrong, and the rest, as they say, is history.”

How about a comment that transcends on-field success? Robert John Edwards has the right idea: “Very weirdly, the moment he congratulated Verstappen for his first championship win, despite feeling disenfranchised, cheated and bereft at having a certain eighth title snatched by a dubious decision.

“The way he conducted himself publicly at that time showed the class of the man. He hasn't been the same since, and yet he had the dignity to go and congratulate his rival with humility and honesty. That is a sportsman.”

Rounding things off, here’s Paul Higgins’ contribution: “Silverstone 2024. I’ve never been a Lewis fan, but for me, it highlighted how somebody who has been at the top of their game, with all the fame and money, gave an insight into his emotional intelligence, demonstrating he is simply human. It was so powerful and dependent on what happens at Ferrari, could be his last-ever race win - on home soil too. Powerful and emotional to watch.”

We’ll be back on Monday with another Question of the Week. See you there, reader.
