These are the best Volkswagen Campervan generations, as voted by you

Unsurprising love for the T1, but there was much more favour for the T3 and T5 models than first expected

Published: 19 Jul 2024

Can you believe the Volkswagen Transporter turned 70 a few weeks back? Despite its seventh generation being primed and ready to take over Cornwall from next year, it’s still strange to think how long the thing has been around.

To commemorate its success - over 13 million units sold since 1954, no less - we wanted to find out which of the various Campervan generations our audience thought was best. Unsurprisingly, the original Samba Bus took an overwhelming number of votes.

“The iconic 23 window first version is undoubtedly the best,” says Tangocamper. “I have also owned a T3 with a Subaru 2.0-litre engine and currently own a T5.1.” Living up to the username there, Tango.

Vonblade also came up with a fairly creative option: “It's a trick question. Objectively, it’s the T6. But what we really want are the oily bits of a T6 with the charming looks of a T2. The T3 just feels too Eastern Bloc, while the T4 too Ford Transit.”

Next up is T-Bird’s defence of one of Vonblade’s criticisms: “The T3 is the sweet spot for me. It has some great improvements from the previous generations but is still very usable in today's world. I know a couple that still use their campers on longer trips. And let’s not forget the ultimate version of it: the Porsche B32. Who wouldn't love a road trip in that?”

And to draw our post to a close, we thought we’d feature Peterson’s brilliant explanation of what the Campervan idea means in a general sense: “What I find admirable is how much these vans can blend into their surroundings.

“They're background characters and each generation dutifully represents the time they were created in. And it's downright astonishing how a disposable work tool has found a cult following and become an icon.”
