Subaru Impreza WRX or Mitsubishi Lancer Evo? We’ve found a winner
The argument for #TeamRed or #TeamBlue comes down to this, and there’s a victor by the thinnest of margins
A long-standing feud, and one we finally got to the bottom of in this week’s question. We did a rough totting up of the answers and the Evo has edged it… just. Here are some of our favourite arguments from you lot, beginning with MJC.
“My inner child is firmly attached to the belief that a blue Subaru with gold wheels was and always will be the fastest car around. That said, I think there’s only one Subaru (‘99 WRX STI) I want, but I’d quite happily see any number of Evos parked outside. So perhaps the Evo wins it by having consistently better models.”
Another supporting vote for #TeamRed came from Duck, who said: “Evo all the way. I’ve owned both, but still have an Evo VIII from ‘04 - one-of-200 we got here in Australia. Mine is from the first batch with full leather trim, and I’ve put a new set of headers on with a three-inch exhaust. The only fault I’ve found is a few bits of dash trim peeling over time. Otherwise, I absolutely love that car.”
Now for a mini comparison test offered by JDMpanda: “Having had and sold both during the Nineties - a standard Impreza Turbo and an Evo 6 Extreme - I made the following observations: the Evo was faster in a straight line, and on a wet road the spray only made it quicker. But the Scooby drove like it was on rails, you can thrash it senseless but the grip level was phenomenal. That’s why it was often considered to be the fastest thing on the road. The Evo sometimes made me nervous, while the Impreza was far more self-assured (on the twisty lanes of Lancashire). Just my observations, but the vote goes to Subaru.”
One more for #TeamBlue, we think. Here’s what SeanWB said: “Subaru without a doubt. I had a ‘97 Impreza that was fettled by the previous owner, and it went around corners like it was on rails! It’s funny that I’ve never had the slightest interest in the Evo, even though many say it’s much better to drive.”
So, there we have it. TG readers have officially crowned the Evo as the winner… though we expect the argument will continue to rage.
