Question of the Week

Question of the Week: which is the greatest Porsche 911 of them all?

With hundreds of variants across seven generations, there’s no simple way of answering this. But answer you must

Published: 18 Mar 2024

It’s been a busy time for Porsche, with the Taycan GT’s painfully slow lap around Germany’s forest-turned-race track, and confirmation of a new Macan and Panamera on the horizon. Oh, and also the small matter of the 911 going hybrid this summer.

Yep, exactly 60 years and over a million units later, one of the world's most recognisable, famous and annoyingly brilliant sportscars is embracing electricity.

Porsche will continue its commitment to the internal combustion engine for a while though, with the next 911 model - due in 2027 - expected to offer both powertrain choices. Which makes us wonder: which is the greatest of them all?

How about the 930 Turbo, with its air-cooled, four/five-speed manual pairing? Or perhaps the 964 Carrera RS, which looks as menacing as Darth Vader in that scene in Rogue One? You may even choose the 991 or 993 GT2s based on mechanical lunacy alone.

But something tells us the vast majority of will favour one of the lightweight editions; think 997 GT3 RS or the Carrera RS 2.7. If you needed a refresher course, here’s our guide to every single generation of Porsche 911.

As always, the results will be published on Friday and showcase the very best comments in response to this post. Let the arguing commence…
