Porsche unveils the Cayenne GTS

Published: 10 Apr 2012

For a moment, suspend judgement on the sort of individual who'd buy a bright green Porsche SUV, because this new Cayenne GTS is quite fast. And we like fast.

How fast? Well, the second-generation GTS slots in between the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo, and uses a tuned version of the S's 4.8-litre V8. You're looking at 420hp and an unspecified quantity of torque. For reference, its lowly, weedy, underpowered predecessor produced a piffling 405hp and 368 torques.

That extra 15hp is good for a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds: proper sports car pace from an enormo-SUV. The GTS will also hit 100mph in 13.3 seconds and top out at 162mph. That's fast.

And it should go round corners, too. The GTS gets Porsche's eight-speed auto ‘box with, naturally, four-wheel-drive, and sits on a chassis 24mm lower than the Cayenne S. Porsche has fitted its active suspension management as standard which, together with that drop in ride height, apparently makes the Cayenne GTS "move with the sports car's trademark composure and agility". Annoyingly, they normally get these things pretty bang on.

Porsche has fitted the Cayenne Turbo's face to the GTS, along with bigger side skirts, wider wheel arches, a roof spoiler with a twin-wing profile and insides covered in Alcantara.

Prices start at £67,147 and it'll hit your local Porsche SuperStore in July 2012. Want one, or is 420bhp not nearly fast enough nor green enough for your two-tonne SUV requirements?
