Porsche Boxster news - Porsche tests electric Boxster - 2011

Published: 15 Feb 2011

Porsche has revealed it is currently trialling three electric prototypes of its Boxster model, dubbed ‘E'.

Powered by electric motors attached to both the front and rear axles - making it all-wheel drive - the Boxster E produces 240bhp and promises a 0-62mph time of 5.3 seconds.

But these charged baby Porkers aren't about speed, they're about massaging our tired and knotted planet while indulging in a dab of opposite lock. The battery pack is 29 kWh, providing a claimed 100-mile range before you inevitably question why you ever bothered with an electric car.

Porsche says all three Boxster E models, currently trialling in Stuttgart, will serve as ‘rolling laboratories', feeding sensitive and important information back to the moustachioed geniuses who are engineering the future.

Don't rule out one of these heading your way in the future either. Porsche has shown us how to do hybrid, and Porsche AG CEO Matthias Muller said: "Electrical mobility is a central challenge of the coming years.

"The Boxster E will help us in solving the practical problems of electric vehicles in the way our customers expect."
