Egg shortage? Here's a load of 996-generation Porsche 911s with *those* headlights
Porsche celebrates 25 years since it launched the first water-cooled 911, and the fried-egg-headlight 996 is on display
Here’s something to brighten up your day, Porsche has gathered together a whole heap of 996s to celebrate 25 years since it launched the first water-cooled 911. Just look at all the fried eggs!
The 996 arrived at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1997 – a year after the very first Boxster with which it shared so many parts. It and the Boxster “secured the continued independence of Porsche", says a 25th anniversary press release, with the 996’s chief designer Harm Lagaaij now freely admitting that “the pressure and the imperative of saving the company was the top priority” – that’s why the two cars were almost identical from the front to the B-pillar. Crikey.
We’ve lots to thank the 996 for, then. Porsche sold roughly 175,000 examples in its time, with more variants available than ever before. Of course, the 911 GT1-98 racer and the GT1 Straßenversion you see above weren’t exactly part of the family, but boy are we glad Porsche included them in this pic. Eggs have never tasted so good.
