New Discovery gets transparent bonnet

Published: 08 Apr 2014

Meet Land Rover's baffling ‘Transparent Bonnet' tech, which lets you see through metal...

Kind of. Cameras located in the vehicle's grille capture footage of the surface you're about to drive over, beam them onto a head-up display, and effectively create a ‘see-through' view of the car's front end, right through to the terrain below. That means you can check for tricky obstacles, and the angle and position of your front wheels.

Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover said: "We are developing new technologies including the Transparent Bonnet to give drivers an augmented view of reality to help them tackle anything from the toughest off-road route to the tight confines of an urban car park."

We'll be able to see - or rather not - the bonnet in full at this year's New York motor show, where the tech's being debuted on the new Discovery concept.
