The new BMW M5 has set a lap record!*
*But it’s not at the Nürburgring. New M car scorches around an F1 circuit
The new BMW M5 is here. It produces 600bhp from a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8. It’ll do 0-62mph in 3.4secs and hit a limiter at 155mph.
And today, we learn that it’ll also go around the Shanghai International Circuit in 2min 22.828secs, setting a new record for a production four-door saloon. If, of course, your name is Bruno Spengler and you have a DTM title under your belt.
Yep, the 2012 touring car champ took on Formula One’s Shanghai circuit for the very first time, in cold, damp conditions, we’re told. So, first time out, and a sub-optimal surface. He still managed to smash the previous lap record by a whopping five seconds, which is a) testament to how handy Spengler is, and b) how capable the new M5 is.
“Besides power and torque,” Spengler later said, “I suppose the secret of this car is its excellent balance.”
If you’re not a German touring car champion with 15 career wins and 48 podiums, you’ll be pleased to know the new M5 can still flatter, and engage.
“Traction is excellent,” TG’s very own Tom Ford said after the first test of the new super saloon. “Steering feel is transparent, and it all feels like the car is doing all the things you want it to.
“It’s easy, and fun, and makes you feel good.”
