Another modified Subaru WRX from ‘Baby Driver’ is up for sale

Whether by design or just serendipity, this very special Subaru WRX STI comes to us on a very special occasion. It is a red WRX STI used in Baby Driver – one of the finest driving movies ever filmed, of course – and is now available for purchase… on the 30th anniversary of Subaru’s STI brand.

Mecum Auctions has managed to bag one of a handful of red STIs used in the film, though this one is unlike the first Baby Driver WRX that came up for sale, because it’s properly all-wheel-drive (the earlier one was converted to rear-drive).

We’re told it started life as a regular WRX, with the WRX STI drivetrain swapped in by Allpro Subaru in Georgia. They didn’t stop there, by the sounds of it. The 2.5-litre, 300bhp boxer engine was treated to forged CP pistons, something called an Exedy Stage 1 clutch (we assume that’s a good clutch), an OK Giken front diff and Cusco rear diff, and the most important modification of all: a hydraulic handbrake.

Perfect of course, for executing impossible high-speed 180s on camera. We imagine the stunt driver was having the time of his life.

There are other bits and bobs on this one, including an STI gauge and STI accessories, and bundled in with the sale comes a build sheet documenting some $20,000 worth of mods to make it movie special, interviews with the stunt driver Jeremy Fry and some screen shots from the movie.

Fry had this to say on picking the WRX for Baby Driver: “Edgar Wright wanted a pedestrian kind of car that would blend in but something that would also be cool. Robert Nagle had figured the WRX as a pretty cool car that we don’t see much, that might give us some options to do some cool driving with.”

Anyone who’s seen the film’s frenetic opening chase scene can confirm that yes, all options were expended in doing some cool driving...
