Watch: hilarious moment a mannequin falls onto an IndyCar track

‘Georgina’ got a bit too close to the action…

Published: 29 Apr 2024

This made us chuckle more than it should. The IndyCar field was left bewildered yesterday when a mannequin - yep, a mannequin - fell onto the track mid-race at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama.

But far from being a prop belonging to a fan, ‘Georgina’ is actually a permanent (well, not any more) feature of the pedestrian bridge, installed by the track’s owner several years ago.

She came loose on lap 52 of the Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix on Sunday, hitting the deck feet first with what can only be described as a 10/10 ‘Touchdown’ landing, before pitching face first onto the side of the track.

Most of the field came within inches of hitting the mannequin as it ploughed past, but debutant Luca Ghiotto wasn’t so lucky, as his front wing deprived Georgina of her right hand. Ouch.

It wasn’t until a yellow flag was thrown for a separate incident that marshals were able to remove her from harm’s way.

This being IndyCar, everyone saw the funny side. Race winner Scott McLaughlin made sure he had his photo taken with Georgina afterwards “even though she nearly ruined my race”.

Had it happened in F1, you can guarantee we’d all be talking about why the FIA should test the halo for mannequin-based impacts. Just in case, y'know.
