There’s an awesome Abarth 124 competing in the Monte Carlo Rally
The little RWD sports car is taking on the big guns
We’re huge fans of the FIA’s R-GT class in rallying – which has stuck with rear wheel drive sports cars whilst the rest of the world flies around in 4WD hatchbacks.
The division throws up some fantastic entries, and this year is no different with a Porsche 911 and an Abarth 124 (not the one pictured above though) currently competing at the iconic Monte Carlo Rally.
Abarth announced the rally spec 124 back in 2016 and privateer Enrico Brazzoli has picked the 296bhp, white-wheeled ballet shoe for the tarmac events of this year’s WRC, as well as five other European rallies, to contest the R-GT Cup.
Two separate Abarths took a one-two in the R-GT Cup last year though, so there’s a reputation for Brazzoli to uphold this season. And after Porsche announced that they will build the Cayman GT4 rally car to compete from 2020, the ‘sports cars with huge spotlights on rally stages’ trend is clearly here to stay. Hurrah!
