Someone buy this Porsche 924 GTR that raced at Le Mans
Eighth of just 19 GTRs built is being auctioned online
You can buy anything online nowadays. Food, books, clothes… historically significant Eighties racing cars. All from the comfort of your own sofa. Today’s idle fancy, courtesy of auction site Stratas, is a very special Porsche. A 924 Carrera GTR, no less, one of just 19 thought to have been built.
Click through the pics and you’ll see it’s looking a bit sorry for itself, having been in long term storage until very recently and not started since the early Noughties. But, unlike the basically unused GTR that was auctioned back in 2016, this one has pedigree. It's battle-scarred, not neglected. It entered Le Mans in 1982 (retiring after 128 laps with transmission failure, admittedly), the 24hrs of Daytona and countless other endurance races until it was retired in 1985.
The collector who bought the GTR in 1988 kept it until earlier this year. Now it’s up for auction, still largely original, having been kept in storage since the early Noughties (it was used in exhibition events throughout the Nineties). It’s being sold with a load of spare body panels and another set of those tremendous BBS centre-lock wheels.
We’d love to see this thing’s 375bhp 2.0-litre motor fire into life once more. Wealthy timewasters of the Internet, make it so.
