Some motorsport has actually happened, and Seb Ogier won

The World Rally Championship forged ahead in Mexico, with Toyota coming off best

Published: 16 Mar 2020

Some motorsport happened at the weekend. Which is news in itself nowadays. Sebastien Ogier won the Mexican round of the World Rally Championship for the sixth time, putting him top of the drivers’ standings.

It means he’s WRC 2020’s third winner in as many rounds, too, proving this is still a wildly competitive motorsport discipline. Below him in second place is Toyota teammate Elfyn Evans, the Welshman taking fourth place in Mexico to boost his chances of grabbing a first world title.

Mind, WRC isn't totally unaffected. Mexico’s finish was brought forward by a day to give teams a better chance of flying home amidst travel chaos, while the next round – Rally Argentina – has been postponed, with Rally Portugal currently the next planned event on 21 to 24 May.

“I heard the organiser and local people planned well and implemented measures to hold this rally under safe conditions,” said Toyota boss Akio Toyoda. “I want to convey my appreciation to them for their work hard in helping the fans to enjoy the event. I also want to share my appreciation to the drivers for trying to entertain the fans as much as possible in such circumstances.”

Three cheers for all involved, huh?
