Pierre Gasly is very keen on a Le Mans drive with Alpine
Alpine F1 driver tells TG that he would consider a mid-season Le Mans attempt if Alpine’s hypercar is competitive
Pierre Gasly has told TopGear.com that he would be very keen on competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans if the opportunity presented itself during an F1 season.
“I'm definitely going to look at doing Le Mans in the future,” Gasly told TG. “For now, 100 per cent of my focus is on Formula One and that's really where I see myself for the next 10 years. It’s where I want to excel and really push myself beyond any limits, but at the same time I do see Le Mans as such an iconic race which could be a one-off competition for me during a season.”
Interesting. Alpine of course has already unveiled the A242_ß – a V6-engined Le Mans hypercar that’ll compete in the WEC and IMSA in 2024. Sounds like Gasly might wait to see if the thing is competitive, though…
“The only condition I would have is that I want to do it to win it,” said the 27 year-old. “I want to be sure that if I do this one-off competition right in the middle of my F1 season, it will be to really fight for the win, otherwise it doesn’t make sense just to settle for a top five or even a podium.
“We'll see in the future, but I’m definitely happy to see Alpine getting involved in endurance racing and I’m looking forward to whatever opportunities will come up in the future.”
French driver, French team, French endurance race. The perfect fit, surely?
