Sébastien Ogier claims fourth WRC crown over the weekend in Polo R WRC
Sébastien Ogier - with the help of teammate Julien Ingrassia - claimed his fourth World Rally Championship crown last weekend, winning the Rally Spain in Catalonia.
That's him, above, in a glorious, smokey drift around a roundabout (the course takes place across both dirt and asphalt). It's the pair's fifth race win of the season, and catapults them to the top of the WRC standings where they now cannot be caught.
Ogier's win then, puts him in fine company: he's only the third WRC contender to be crowned champion four years in a row, and the fourth four-time champ in WRC history. He joins such names as Juha Kankkunen and Tommi Mäkinen. Though he's a way off nine-time champ Sébastian Loeb. Still, he's got a bit of time to make up some ground...
Says Ogier: "It is an honour to be mentioned in the same breath as such big names as Kankkunen and Mäkinen. I would like to say a huge thank you to our team at Volkswagen. Without them, Julien and I would not be here today. They do a fantastic job all year and we have had a perfect car all season.
"I had great fun at the wheel of the Polo R WRC once again this weekend. The tension ahead of the closing Power Stage was obviously greater than usual, given the fact that we were within touching distance of the title, and bearing in mind the mistake we made last year. But we’ve done it. Despite the more difficult regulations, and despite the strong opposition. I am extremely proud of this title.
"It is now time to celebrate in style with the team and my wife – and when I get home I can show my young son Tim the trophy that daddy won. I dedicate this world championship title to him.”
Aww, bless. Well done, Seb.
