This massive rear wing has a Ford F-150 Lightning attached to it

Ford is taking on Pikes Peak with its all-electric pickup, although it has made a few minor modifications

Published: 03 Jun 2024

This swan-neck rear wing fad really is getting out of hand, isn’t it? Just look at the size of that thing up there. Though the giant appendage that looms over this F-150 Lightning SuperTruck is apparently entirely functional.

Fold tells us the "aerodynamic features" of this EV demonstrator allow it to produce 2,722kg of downforce at 150mph, which is probably what you'd call 'enough'. Clearly nicking that digger bucket to use as a diffuser was worthwhile.

Ford also says this downforce will be “integral for its efforts at Pikes Peak”. Yep, the F-150 Lightning will be taking on the mountain.

We haven’t actually been given too many details on the SuperTruck, but last year Ford took its SuperVan 4.2 to Pikes Peak with a three-motor, 1,400bhp powertrain, so expect the SuperTruck to get something similar.

Romain Dumas, the current Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record holder, will drive the SuperTruck on 23 June, and Ford reckons the insights it gains will “inform software calibration and battery cell chemistry for production vehicles as well as future race programs”. A very noble goal, but mostly we reckon the Ford engineers just wanted to fit the biggest possible rear wing to a race car.
