Lotus’ brutal Evija X has just set the third fastest-ever Nürburgring lap time

Hethel's electric monster slots in right behind the VW ID.R and Porsche 919 Evo. Yeah, it's seriously quick

Published: 25 Apr 2024

Let’s cut straight to the chase: just look at the size of that rear wing, which in itself likely stands taller than the Burj Khalifa. Footing this particular skyscraper is a tricked-out version of Lotus’ Evija hypercar, which has just set the third-fastest lap time ever around Germany’s Green Hell.

It posted a 6m 24s run, with only the Volkswagen ID.R (6m 05s) and the apparently quicker-than-an-F1 car Porsche 919 Evo (5m 19s) sitting above it. Impressive, given that the Evija ‘X’ still uses the same chassis and full-carbon body as the standard car.

It even retains the quad-electric motor setup to maintain the 2,011bhp output and enough torque to kickstart a red dwarf planet. Lotus has instead focussed its attention on streamlining the Evija with sharper bumpers and splitters, while more ducts have been opened up to invariably improve airflow to that skyscraper.

The Evija X has then been signed off with Lotus’ vintage motorsport colours, because what else would befit a car attempting to join such an elusive bracket of track-only monsters?

No word yet on whether Lotus will create a batch for customers, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it does become an option somewhere down the line. And if so, expect the Evija X to bump the comparatively boring standard car’s two-million-pound price tag up a few notches.
