Billy Monger has won his first race since his accident

TopGear salutes an incredible, determined young racer

Published: 20 May 2019

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or have the emotional capability of one, you’ve probably shed a tear at Billy Monger’s story over the last couple of years.

Well, it’s time to reach for that handkerchief again, because the young Brit has won his first race since having both of his legs amputated after a Formula 4 crash in 2017.

Monger took the top spot on the podium at the Pau Grand Prix – the second round of the Euroformula Open Championship – in his specially adapted Carlin Formula 3 car. This wasn’t any old win either. Monger, who had qualified in 11th place, ducked into the pits at the end of the warm-up lap to switch from slicks to wet tyres.

With the rain falling in Southwestern France, the 20-year-old was followed in by several others, but it was he who made the best progress through the field. Monger then eventually took the lead when Motopark duo Julian Hanses and Liam Lawson took each other out.

That crash led to a safety car, but Monger was able to manage the restart and hold on for victory. The boy has serious talent: watch this space.

Things are moving quickly for Monger too. This is now his second season back in motorsport since the crash, after he finished sixth in the British F3 Championship last season. Billy, TG salutes you.
