This bewinged Hyundai i30N is going Time Attack racing

In one of today’s best pieces of news, Hyundai has announced that it will compete in the 2019 World Time Attack Challenge at Sydney Motorsport Park later this month, becoming the first manufacturer ever to do so in the process.

We’ve featured Time Attack before on TopGear.com, mainly because it is by far one of the best forms of motorsport that currently exists. The cars are crazy, the aero is bonkers, the classes of racing are diverse and the cornering speeds are ridiculous. 

Speaking of classes, Hyundai Australia will compete in the Clubsprint section for lightly modified road cars. And it’ll do so in the brilliant i30N Fastback you see above.

It may be classed as lightly modified but, to go along with those wings, Hyundai’s High-Performance Team in Korea has fitted an upgraded turbocharger and intercooler, whilst also giving the ECU a bespoke tune, to extract a few more horsepowers from the i30N’s 2.0-litre turbo engine. No actual figure is quoted, but it's bound to top 300bhp.

Elsewhere there are bits carried over from the new, not for UK, i30N Project C including the lightweight OZ Racing forged wheels, a carbonfibre bonnet and an Alcantara steering wheel. 

There’s also a new exhaust system for maximum noise and, as you’d expect, the inside is apparently stripped of all home comforts and fitted with a roll cage.

Want more details on the mega wings? Of course you do. According to the World Time Attack’s official website, the front splitter will generate 250kg of downforce, whilst the rear wing is capable of 450kgs. Crikey.
