This bewinged 1,318bhp Blazer EV.R is Chevy's electric NASCAR prototype
Take a stupendously powerful tri-motor NASCAR e-chassis, and add... a crossover body on top. Plus wing
Chevrolet has had a crack at a potential future NASCAR competitor by slinging the reasonably sensible Blazer EV’s body on top of the entirely unsensible Next Gen chassis to create a 1,318bhp lump of tyre noise and smoke. Yeah, this ain’t yer average family workhorse any more.
Much like the recently revealed Ford Mach-E NASCAR prototype, the Blazer ‘EV.R’ uses the same suspension and powertrain setup from NASCAR's official template, which means three motors, all-wheel-drive, a 78kWh liquid-cooled battery and special Goodyear rubber desperately clinging on for dear life.
No specific performance figures have been mentioned, but considering this thing has twice the power of a production-spec SS, itself capable of darting to 60mph in 3.4s, it’s fair to suggest the EV.R could be faster than the current NASCAR competitors.
On how the car feels to drive, Chevy test driver Justin Allgaier said: “There are so many things you don’t think about until you’re in the car testing it. I’m used to knowing my speed through gearing and listening to engine revs, so I had to change how I judge corner entry speed. With this platform, we’re learning how to strategically adjust regenerative braking, which has a big impact on braking sections and cornering balance."
There’s been a lot of focus on aero, naturally, and Chevy has stretched, lowered and phattened the Blazer’s original design. Said aero boost arrives via new splitters and diffusers. Can’t forget about that ginormous forged carbon wing either.
Reckon a few of these Blazers knocking against a few of those Mach-Es at 200mph could make for a hilarious watch someday?
