Be afraid: Lambo’s made a racing Urus Super-SUV

Behold the Urus ST-X Concept, built for a single-make championship in 2020

Published: 19 Nov 2018

Lamborghini makes a really fast SUV called the Urus. Lamborghini also runs a single-make racing championship with the Huracán. Clearly, Lamborghini occasionally likes to deliberately cross its memos.

Because after the one-off Squadra Corse SC18 Aventador comes this Urus ST-X Concept: a Super-SUV imbued with motorsport DNA designed for a single-make championship in 2020.

It’s supposed to be an SUV that combines both circuit and off-road track, which means the proposed format – apparently based around Europe and in the Middle East on specially prepared FIA-approved circuits - will be wild.

The car? It’s green, with a carbon fibre bonnet and larger air intakes over the regular Urus to better cool that twin-turbo V8. There’s also a rear wing, new racing exhausts and 21in single-nut aluminium alloy wheels.

Lamborghini tells us its lighter than the standard Urus – 25 per cent lighter, in fact – which is actually hugely significant. It brings the Urus’s kerb weight down from over two tonnes to 1,650kg, or thereabouts. Which means the 641bhp/627lb ft of torque can be applied to much better effect.

There’s no word on performance data – or indeed where the lightweighting has occurred – but an already sub-four-second to 62mph SUV with, presumably, no interior will probably be mighty punchy.

We do know that it has a roll-cage integrated into the frame, mind, along with a fire extinguisher and FT3 fuel tank. And we also suspect that the customers who opt for this ‘arrive-and-drive’ one-make Urus championship will probably be having a whale of a time.
