Audi wins the 2011 Spa 24hr race

Published: 01 Aug 2011

62 cars representing 13 different manufacturers convened at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps over the weekend to contest the annual endurance feat that is the 24 hrs of Spa. And Audi won. Again.

Fresh from the marque's 2011 Le Mans win, the Audi Sport Team WRT R8 LMS driven by Mattias Ekstrom, Greg Franchi and Timo Scheider took the number one slot after running 'like clockwork' for 24hrs. In fact, Audi led the Spa race for 22 of the 24 hours.

Need for Speed's BMW Z4 clocked in second, while third place went to the Mercedes SLS GT3 of Thomas Jager, Stephane Lemeret and Kenneth Heyer. Yes, that Kenneth Heyer, whose father Hans piloted the first AMG racing 300 SEL 6.8 to a 2nd placed finish at Spa 40 years ago.

McLaren's MP4 GT3 cars however, had seen better days. One of the three caught fire while the another was forced "off its trajectory" and into a wall at turn one. Both drivers thankfully walked away unharmed. Click through for some pics...
