The 2018/19 Formula E title will go down to the final race

Formula E World Championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne was involved in a final lap pile-up during a hectic first race of the New York City E-Prix, meaning four different drivers can still win the title heading into tomorrow’s final round.

Sebastien Buemi drove faultlessly to fend off Alex Lynn’s early charge and win from pole position, putting himself into fourth in the championship and still just about in touch with Vergne, whilst New Zealander Mitch Evans came from 13th to finish second – meaning the Jaguar man now sits in third overall and is also still in contention.

Audi Sport ABT’s Lucas di Grassi finished fifth after making his way up from 14th on the grid, and it’s the Brazilian who remains the closest challenger to Vergne, 22 points behind with a maximum 29 available from tomorrow’s qualifying session and race.

Vergne had battled back into the points brilliantly on the streets of Brooklyn after suffering a puncture and damaged front wing from contact early on, but with one lap to go he and Felipe Massa collided at turn two. Thanks to the narrowness of Formula E’s street circuits, the pair were both joined by Vergne’s DS Techeetah teammate Andre Lotterer and Mahindra man Jerome D’Ambrosio, who actually drove straight over the top of Massa’s Venturi - because why the heck not?

Frenchman Vergne, who is the sport’s reigning champion, eventually limped home in 15th with his front wing tucked under the floor of the car.

Even Formula E’s fiercest critics couldn’t deny that the first of the weekend’s two races was absolutely chocked full of drama, and with four drivers still in the running, the title is set to go down to the wire once again.
